A Poplar Bluff man has been arrested in an attack that occurred Sunday at a local gas station.

The attack was random and the suspect was unknown to the victim, a 40-year-old woman who was stabbed multiple times, police reported.

Timothy Wayne Bishop, 33, was arrested Monday by Poplar Bluff police. He’s charged with first degree assault, armed criminal action, unlawful use of a weapon and tampering with physical evidence. He was booked Monday at the Butler County jail.

“Investigators began reviewing area surveillance and interviewing potential witnesses. In doing so, video of a potential suspect was obtained,” according to a press release from Chief Mike McClain. “A subsequent interview with Bishop indicated the attack was random and that he had no prior contact with the victim.”

The incident occurred at approximately 10:39 p.m. at the Casey’s General Store in the 500 block of East Pine Boulevard.

The woman was taken by ambulance to Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center for treatment before being flown elsewhere, police said.

The woman had told police she didn’t know the attacker, but described a white man with brown hair, possibly driving a white car, police said.

Police said the case would be forwarded to the Butler County Prosecuting Attorney for review.
