KENNETT — When the McKay family of Dexter decided to expand its Mail n’ More business, they looked no further than the Dunklin County seat.
The McKays — Darrell and his wife Stephanie — purchased an existing shipping outfit, Mail n’ More, in Stoddard County and the fit is a great one for the couple and their three children.
“There was a family at Dexter who were closing in on retirement,” Darrel McKay said.
He stands in a spacious First Street facility behind a counter in front of packing tables and shelves filled with shipping products.
“They were interested in selling their business. We went and talked to them,” he said. “We did some trial runs with it to see if it fit our family as well, and it really did. So, we bought their business.”
Like most folks in the Bootheel, both Darrell and Stephanie work long hours to provide for their family.
“We have three kids who attend school at Dexter,” McKay said. “A 14-year-old, a 10-year-old and a nine-year-old.
“So, they’re in elementary and middle school. Stephanie is a registered nurse who works for Saint Francis Health System at Sikeston in the Ferguson Medical Building.”
The McKays took over the Dexter business in July 2024, and decided to open a second Mail n’ More at Kennett. No facility like it exists at the Dunklin County seat, McKay explained.
Mail n’ More is mainly a shipping store, able to handle packages for UPS, FedEx and USPS.
“We can box it, pack it and ship it and do it all right here,” McKay said. “There are several places here at Kennett where people could drop off packages. But no place that offered the services we do with FedEx, UPS and USPS all at one stop.”
Mail n’ More offers a variety of post-office-type boxes as well, McKay explained, at a low cost.
“And they can receive UPS and FedEx packages along with USPS mail,” he emphasized. “They can’t do that at the post office.”
Convenience is a keyword for McKay, and he aims to please.
“It doesn’t matter what size the box is,” he said. “We’ll always hold packages for you.
“People can get come in and pick them up. From the smallest boxes and biggest packages, no extra charge.”
Although the McKays employ several people at Dexter, Darrell said he’s kick-starting the Kennett location himself to make sure it’s up and running properly.
“Once we see what the needs are here at Kennett, we’ll hire more employees,” he said. “Dexter does really well, and we’re still being found by people here because we’re so new.
“We’ll let this location mature a little before we expand further. We have a place in mind if we decide to open another store. Right now, we have no interest in that. We’re focusing on Kennett and Dexter.”
So far, the business community has welcomed the McKay family with open arms.
Darrell said the Dexter location is more than a workplace for the family. The McKays live at the Business 60 location, as well.
“It actually has living quarters above the business,” McKay said.
Kennett’s Mail n’ More is, as McKay described a one-stop-shop for shipping, and clients find more than that during their visits, McKay said.
“We offer a lot of services, including drop-off service,” he explained. “People can drop off their packages here absolutely free of charge.
“Anybody can come in with a pre-paid label doing their Amazon returns, set it on the counter, we’ll give you a receipt showing you dropped it off and it’s absolutely free. We fax. We do printing work. We laminate. We do notary services and emails if someone needs those services. We have all the shipping supplies on hand and boxes if you’re moving.”
Mail n’ More is located at 1023 First Street, Kennett and 205 W. Business U.S. 60 in Dexter. For more information, contact McKay at 573-559-3211.
