To celebrate the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States, the Poplar Bluff chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution gave regional schools prints of historic American paintings.

For the commemoration of the United States upcoming 250th Anniversary, the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDASR) is encouraging individual chapters all to use community projects to raise awareness of the semiquincentennial and the service and sacrifice of America’s patriot.

The Poplar Bluff Chapter’s project was placing sets of historic prints in area schools, according to an NSDAR press release.

These sets included “The Spirit of ‘76,” a.k.a. “Yankee Doodle” by Archibald Willard for exhibition in Philadelphia during 1876 centennial; “The Writing the Declaration of Independence, 1776,” by J. L. G. Ferris featuring Thomas Jefferson, John Adams and Benjamin Franklin; and “The Signing of Declaration of Independence” by John Trumbull done in 1818, with the Committee of Five featured. Then there is “Washington Crossing the Delaware” by Emmanuel Leutze, commemorating the 1776 Christmas night surprise attack on Hessian troops stationed near Trenton, New Jersey. And last, there is “The Signing of the Constitution” by Howard Chandler Christy, currently displayed in the House of Representatives wing of the U.S. Capitol.

The accompanying plaque reads, “These prints commemorate the men and women who achieved American Independence. These Patriots, believing in the noble cause of liberty, fought valiantly to found a new nation, 1775-1783. Presented by the Poplar Bluff Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution in honor of the 250th anniversary of the United States.”

The chapter purchased the prints through the National Center for Constitutional Studies. Sets of prints were sent to 14 schools in Poplar Bluff, Neelyville, Broseley, Fisk, Qulin, Ellsinore, Naylor, Gatewood and Doniphan. Three Rivers College will also receive a set.
