Emergency responders were called out to house fire and explosion in eastern Butler County following a boom felt across Poplar Bluff shortly at 8:51 a.m. Friday.
The explosion was from a private residence located on Highway 605.
Shortly after 10 a.m., the Butler County Sheriff's Department confirmed two people were deceased.
The State Fire Marshal is investigating the incident, and the Butler County coroner was on the scene.
Butler County Sheriff Lieutenant Derek House said the department is speculating that a propane explosion was the cause.
"It's still under investigation," he added.
House said the residents recently had their propane tank refilled.
Multiple firefighters used two hoses to contain the fire, while deputies with the Butler County Sheriff’s Department secured the scene.

Eyewitnesses reported a mushroom-like cloud was visible to the east from Downtown Poplar Bluff shortly after the boom was felt.
