Butler County Community Resource Council and the Poplar Bluff Museum have partnered again to hold a series of historical walking tours in October. The tours are part of the CRC’s Walktober, designed to help Butler Countians walk and enjoy exercise. The tours will be led by Kati Ray with the Poplar Bluff Museum.
The Downtown North tour starts at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 5. It starts and ends at the corner of 5th and Main Streets and includes the North Main Street Historic District.
The Tornado of 1927 tour begins at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 12. It begins and ends at the Mo-Ark Regional Railroad Museum and features stories of the 86 people killed in the tragic May 9, 1927 tornado.
The Downtown West walk is 10:30 a.m. Oct. 19, meeting and ending at the Mo-Ark Regional Railroad Museum and features downtown sites such as the Rodgers Theatre and the Sixth Street and Poplar Bluff Commercial Historic Districts.
The final walk is the Cemetery Tour at 3 p.m. Oct. 26 in the Poplar Bluff City and Woodlawn Cemeteries. The tour starts and end at the Maintenance Shed in the City Cemetery and features the gravesites of notable men and women from Poplar Bluff’s history.
All of the tours are about one mile and will take about an hour and a half. Registration is free, but required.
