Children were invited Thursday to rev up their creativity in an effort to promote reading.

A Roll & Read event was hosted at Hendrickson Park by Poplar Bluff Parks and Recreation and the Butler County Community Resource Council.

Families decorated bikes, wagons and strollers before setting out on a story trail. The event also offered a book distribution and an opportunity to make bookmarks, as well as other crafts.

For anyone who missed this event, the weekend brings two more chances to celebrate reading with children.

Poplar Bluff Library is hosting a sensory play at 1 p.m. Saturday at the main branch. They will have Play-Do and tools for children to get creative.

Altrusa will host a story time at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, also at the main branch, in honor of International Literacy Day. This event includes a book distribution, compliments of Altrusa, and a reading of the “Very Hungry Caterpillar.”

Library story times in September will be held each Tuesday, starting at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 10 and 10 a.m. Sept. 17 and 24. these are held at the main branch.

Next Tuesday will feature a new picture book based on the song Dream Weaver by Gary Wright, following a little boy’s dream of a train taking him to the moon.

Dawn Prim will be the guest storyteller Sept. 17 and 24, and invites children to bring their favorite stuffed animal for games and sing-alongs.
