FISK — Teachers lined the hallways and manned the doors as they awaited the onslaught of children Tuesday morning, as the school year for the Twin Rivers School District officially started.
In short order, buses arrived while some other parents drove their children to school, and the campus was soon covered with children from grades kindergarten through eighth.
Twin Rivers Superintendent Rob Brown kept a watchful eye at the Fisk campus throughout the morning.
“The first day of school can be a little bit chaotic,” Brown noted. “But the staff here is very good, and they keep everything managed well.”
As children entered the building, younger students filled the gymnasium while the older students occupied the cafeteria to wait.
“The students are going to wait for their teachers to arrive and take them to their rooms,” Brown explained. “We’re hoping for a really good start to a safe and productive year.”
Elizabeth Willis, seventh and eighth grade science teacher, said she had a quiet summer, but she is looking forward to getting the school year going.
“I look forward to meeting new students and learning the different personalities,” she noted. “I think that’s what I look forward to the most.”
Some parents, like Stacy and Siania Tavita, escorted their children into the school while holding their hand all the way.
“My youngest is in kindergarten,” Stacy explained. “She’s a really friendly girl and I’m looking forward to seeing how she handles being here. I really hope she can make some friends here that she can stay close to all the way through high school.”
Abigail Davis escorted her four children to the school and was sure to get a photo of them before they entered the building.
“This is an exciting day,” she stated. “It’s another chance at having a new beginning.”
When asked what she is looking forward to the most in this school year, she said she is looking forward to the arts and crafts that will be brought home.
“I’m also looking forward to the stories,” she laughed. “There are always entertaining stories. My son is looking forward to the chicken nuggets.”
She said she is slightly concerned how her son will do this year.
“He was recently diagnosed with skin cancer,” she explained. “I just hope he can stay healthy and not have to leave the school for any long period of time. I hope he can enjoy himself and his time here with his friends.”
