The Poplar Bluff Regional Business Airport will be hosting an informational program from the Federal Aviation Administration on drone restrictions and certifications. The event is at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 14 at the airport and is free to all attendees.
“We are the only location in Southeast Missouri to be granted this opportunity,” Airport Director Gary Pride said, “There is considerable unauthorized and illegal drone use by real estate, hobbyist, and agrigultural people.”
He noted, in their defense, the regulations evolve rapidly due to advances in drone technology. Pride said drones are quickly expanding in their applications like agricultural spraying, mapping crop conditions, and surveying.
“Most operators, however, are unaware of the restrictions and certifications required to both safely and legally operate their drone,” he added.
Those attending the program will receive continuing education credits through the FAA’s Wings Flight Safety Program. Rich Yokum, the presenter, is a commercial drone operator responsible for over 300 crafts across the globe.
“We are very fortunate to have him share his knowledge and experiences,” Pride said, “The purpose of the program is not to punish those who are presently doing it wrong but rather educate them in how to come into compkliance and to safely operate in this exciting new industry.”
Those interested can call the airport 573-686-8669 to reserve a spot.
