Since 1956, Rushin Towing has been getting local residents out of trouble. With the passing of Steve Rushin last September, his nephew Bud has taken over the longstanding operation. He is the third generation to run the business and his wife, Theresa, operates as the bookkeeper.
For 20 years, Bud owned an insurance adjusting business. Taking over the family enterprise was not something he considered, though he has fond memories of growing up around the business.
“We lived with a police scanner in our ear our whole lives,” Bud recalled.
Steve asked him to start running Rushin Towing approximately four years ago amid declining health. Bud remembered always looking up to Steve and learning a multitude of skills from him.
Steve asked Bud to purchase the business after six months of learning to manage the company. Bud noted his uncle passed shortly after the purchase.
“I can’t say I’m ever over it,” he said.
Forming another link in a long chain, Bud contended the current crew of employees is the best in the company’s history.
“It’s all locked in,” he remarked.
Rushin Towing is expanding into the neighboring lot with the purchase of the Allan’s Muffler Shop building. Bud teased the possibility of a speed shop in the building to serve the demand of the local speedway.
With new tow trucks arriving soon, he commented business has been steadily growing.
“I appreciate all the loyal customers we’ve got,” Bud said.
He extended gratitude to the Poplar Bluff Police Department and the Missouri State Highway Patrol for their continued support and referrals.
“We’re trained for really any situation,” Bud confirmed.
In its 68th year of operation, the fourth generation is already taking an interest. Bud said his sons Rob and Ross have assumed active roles in the business.
With decades of experience, he is confident Rushin Towing is ready to take on any challenges the future may bring.
Bud asserted, “There’s probably nothing we’ve never seen.”
