KENNETT — A Kennett man described by a judge as a “child predator” has been sentenced to 50 years in prison.

Matthew Prewett, 43, pleaded guilty to one count of first degree statutory rape and eight counts of invasion of privacy, according to a press release Wednesday from Dunklin County Prosecutor Nicholas Jain.

No further information will be released to protect the victims due to the nature of the charges, Jain said.

After a sentencing argument, Judge Joshua Underwood sentenced the defendant to 34 years on the statutory rape of a child under 14 years old and two years each on the invasion of privacy charges, resulting in a 50-year sentence.

The defendant had already been sentenced to 20 years in prison by the United States District Court in Cape Girardeau, Jain said.

In sentencing Prewett, Underwood referred to the defendant as a child predator based on his conduct.

Jain thanks the Kennett Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation for their work investigating this case, especially Kennett Police officer Aaron Mays who was the lead investigator.
