• Officers believe Leo Peterson, a 17-year-old lad recently charged with horse theft, intended a career of wrongdoing. Butler County farmer Tom Grayson states Peterson came to his farm riding the allegedly stolen horse and stopped and represented himself as a stock buyer who wanted to buy some goats from Grayson with an allegedly forged check. Authorities say Peterson also tried to recently buy a calf near Qulin with a check that also may have been forged.
• Virgil “Sunflower” Dabbs, who was defeated in a wrestling match with Billy Keith at Neelyville three weeks ago, is not satisfied with the match and is challenging Keith for a rematch to be staged on Christmas Eve in conjunction with the Fitzgerald vs. “Dark Horse” match. The challenge was announced in a letter on the front page of the Interstate American.

• The International Hat Company plans to build a manufacturing facility at Piedmont, the Missouri Division of Commerce and Industrial Development has announced. The 52,500 square-foot plant will be designed to employ 300 people and would mean a payroll of $1.5 million annually. IHC is the largest hat manufacturer in the United States and has factories in St. Louis, Oran, Dexter and Lutesville.
• The Poplar Bluff Mules boys basketball team defeated the Charleston Bluejays 66-51 last night (Dec. 18). Scott Harrell led the Mules (3-4) with 14 points, while Robert Dodd added 12 and Bruce Dameworth had 10 as head coach Jim King played 10 players in the contest.
