Filing will open Tuesday for three spots on the Poplar Bluff City Council.
The positions will be for wards 2 and 4, as well as the unexpired term of an at-large spot.
Filing will remain open until Dec. 26 for school and municipal elections to be decided in the April 2 election.
Mayor Shane Cornman currently holds the Ward 4 position, which he was first elected to in 2018. Cornman became mayor pro tem in 2021 and mayor in April 2023. He has said helping find permanent locations for city hall and the police department were among his goals.
Mayor Pro Tem Jerrica Fox has been the Ward 2 representative since April 2021. She was previously an at-large city council person. Fox was the second youngest city council person in Poplar Bluff’s history when she was first appointed to the council to fill a vacant seat. She was selected by the council in April 2023 to be mayor pro tem.
Billy DePew currently holds the at-large seat which will be up for election. DePew was appointed earlier this year, following the resignation of Robert Duckett, who moved outside of city limits.
At the time of publication, information was not available regarding whether the current office holders would file for new terms.
The Ward 4 and Ward 2 positions will have three-year terms available. The at-large position will have a two-year term, the unexpired portion of Duckett’s original term.
Candidates for city council must be 21 years of age; a citizen of the United States; a qualified voter; an inhabitant of the city for one year; an inhabitant of the ward for which he or she seeks office for one year and, if elected, must continue to live in that ward throughout his or her term. No one who is in arrears for any tax lien, forfeiture or defalcation in office can be elected.
