The Rodgers Theatre will open the holiday season at 6 p.m. Friday with its free, annual Christmas Movie Night. The theater is showing “Elf” and “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” and expects a visit from Santa Claus.

Christmas Movie Night began around seven years ago, Rodgers CEO Wally Duncan said, showing classics like “It’s a Wonderful Life,” “Miracle on 34th Street,” “White Christmas” and “Home Alone.”

“This year the board wanted to get a classic Christmas movie, but something a little bit more modern, I guess you’d say. And so we chose ‘Elf.’ It’s a 2003 movie, and it’s already considered to be a Christmas classic,” Duncan said.

“How the Grinch Stole Christmas” was chosen by virtue of its popularity.

Santa Claus will be on scene at 6 p.m. before the movies begin at 7 p.m. Families are invited to bring their kids, get photos and enjoy a cup of hot cocoa from the concession stand.

“We’re looking forward to having a good crowd there and enjoying a couple of good Christmas movies,” said Duncan.

He explained the movie night has “always had a good response” from the community, especially after it moved to Black Friday and no longer conflicted with the Christmas Parade in December.

“It’s turned out to be a good night to have a Christmas movie,” he said. “And for us, it kicks off the Christmas season for Poplar Bluff.”

The Rodgers Theatre is located at 204 N. Broadway St. More information is available at rodgerstheatre.org.
