Neelyville voters will fill five open seats on the Board of Education in April’s election.

Filing information was approved last week by current members of the board.

Filing for municipal and state offices opens Dec. 5, and can be done during normal business hours for the school district office. It closes Dec. 26.

“There will be a temporary break in the dates due to the Christmas holiday break,” Superintendent Heather Black told board members. “But the offices will be back and open on Dec. 26.”

Black advised there will be three propositions given to the public in April of 2024.

“One will be to choose one board member who shall serve as a member of the district for one year,” she said. “The second will be to choose two board members who shall serve as members of the board of education for the school district for two years. And the third will be two board members who shall serve as members of the board of education of our district for a term of three years.”

Black advised whenever candidates come to sign up, they will have to state for which position they are applying.

“There is a Missouri statute that states no person shall file for more than one office so they can’t be under all three places - they will have to choose which term they are wanting,” Black told board members.

The election will fill the spots of both expiring terms, and terms for which board members resigned earlier this year. The election will fill the unexpired term in cases of resignations for terms that would have extended past April.

Another action discussed by the board, but which was tabled, was the district’s attempt to find another minivan to replace one that is constantly breaking down. Board members voted to continue to search for all affordable options.

Black also provided an update to board members regarding a recent facilities and maintenance report for the district.

“A new gas bus was delivered today,” Black told board members. She said that “a new electric bus is scheduled to be delivered after the week of Thanksgiving.”

Another big maintenance issue for the district was when one of the air conditioning units went out over the gym. Unfortunately, Black informed board members, the unit had to be replaced and could not repaired.

Another issue Black addressed was a direct fiber connection to the Hillview Elementary School campus.

“We could do this with our E-Rate program,” Black said. “That is something that has already been approved but it would still have to go out for a bid.”

Overall, Black advised that there would be a price reduction for the school district because of the E-Rate program. There were no updates to in-person instruction. The board meeting for December was scheduled at 7 p.m. Dec. 21, 2023. The executive closed session meets at 6 p.m.
