__Oct. 24, 1923__

• State school inspector J.W. Pierce of Cape Girardeau visited the Neelyville school and seemed much pleased with the work of the school and the teachers in charge. He said the enrollment was extraordinary for a new country high school.

Pierce seemed enthusiastic over the future prospects of the school and said it could easily rank second to Poplar Bluff High School on account of its splendid location, which gives a large radius of country with good roads to draw from.

• A Hupmobile car believed to be owned by Dr. Greathouse of Fisk caught fire at 12:40 p.m. today on the east side of the Butler County Courthouse, where it was parked. The fire department answered the alarm, but upon arrival, they found two bystanders, H. Anderson of C Street and R.T. Russell of Front Street, had succeeded in controlling the blaze by throwing dirt on it.

The fire reportedly started from an oil-soaked rag wrapped around the exhaust manifold where it connects with the engine.

__Oct. 24, 1973__

• A 26-year-old Ellington man allegedly set fire to his cell at the Poplar Bluff city jail at 12:50 a.m. today. Poplar Bluff Police Chief Bill Pierce identified the man as Larry Bell, 26, of Ellington. He was arrested Monday, Oct. 22, on a St. Louis felony warrant for stealing a Ford van truck.

Bell reportedly said he started the fire in his cell when he became cold. Officers said he put paper in the window and set it on fire. The window sill caught fire and firemen were called to extinguish the blaze.

• Malden and Doniphan each received cash awards at the 10th annual Missouri Community Betterment conference and awards banquet, held Oct. 23-24 in Jefferson City. Malden placed second in communities with a population between 5,000 and 10,000 and was awarded $500, while Doniphan placed third in communities with a population between 1,000 and 2,000 and also received a cash award.
