As I write these words, I am en route to McAllen, Texas, along with several other state representatives, on a mission of great importance — to discuss strategies for addressing the ongoing border and immigration crisis as state governments. The situation unfolding at our southern border is deeply concerning, and it warrants our immediate attention and thoughtful action.
Our great nation has always been a symbol of hope, opportunity and liberty for those seeking a better life. However, the surge of illegal immigration, including criminals, poses a real threat to our national welfare. While we acknowledge that many of those arriving are good, hardworking people searching for a brighter future, we must recognize that this influx needs to be managed in a controlled and lawful manner.
One issue that demands immediate attention is the need for comprehensive vetting processes for all individuals seeking entry into the United States. Our current immigration system is not equipped to handle the influx of people crossing the border illegally, and this poses a risk to both national security and public safety. By establishing robust vetting procedures, we can ensure that individuals with malicious intent, including criminals and human traffickers, are not allowed entry.
The heinous crimes related to human trafficking are particularly troubling. It is heartbreaking to hear about cases where women are kidnapped and forced into prostitution. Moreover, the alarming number of missing children only intensifies our concern. We must prioritize the safety and well-being of all individuals, especially the most vulnerable among us.
Additionally, it is crucial to emphasize that legal immigration should be a fair and just process. Allowing people to cross the border without adhering to established legal channels is unfair to those who have patiently followed the legal process. We need to ensure that our immigration system is efficient and accessible to those who genuinely seek a better life in America.
One of the gravest concerns is the involvement of Mexican cartels in trafficking drugs, especially fentanyl, into the United States. The staggering statistics reveal that over 200,000 Americans have tragically overdosed and died from synthetic opioids like fentanyl since 2020. The solution includes border security measures and targeted efforts to dismantle these criminal organizations. Collaboration between federal, state, and local authorities is crucial to addressing this menace effectively.
Furthermore, the significant increase in illegal migration under the current administration is troubling. Department of Homeland Security data shows that more than 1.5 million illegal migrants have entered the U.S. since President Joe Biden took office – more than triple the number recorded during the last three years of President Trump’s presidency. This surge not only strains our resources but also highlights the need for immediate and comprehensive immigration reform.
In our mission to Texas, we hope to engage in constructive dialogue and exchange ideas with fellow representatives to chart a path forward. It is our collective responsibility to find a balanced solution that respects the principles of justice, compassion, and security. We must remember that, at its core, America is a nation of immigrants, and we can find a way to uphold our values while ensuring the safety and prosperity of our citizens.
In conclusion, the border and immigration crisis is a challenge that requires our utmost attention and dedication. We must work together, across party lines and jurisdictions, to find sustainable solutions that address the issues of border security, legal immigration, human trafficking, and drug-related crimes. Let us embark on this mission with a spirit of unity and determination to protect the welfare and future of our country.
May God bless and keep you and our great nation.
