Sept. 8, 1948

• Two drivers, one car, a lot of trouble — a couple is arrested on drunk driving charges for operating the same vehicle while intoxicated. William Tanner and Mrs. Zieba Weyer were stopped near the junction of highways 53 and 67 on Labor Day. Despite Tanner sitting in the driver’s seat and Weyer the passenger side, both had their hands on the wheel and were steering at the time they were stopped.

• Poplar Bluff’s first higher learning institution, Missouri Baptist College, opened its first semester with 53 students.

• 2,822 students enrolled in Poplar Bluff’s first day of school.

• The Daily American Republic advertises sewing patterns for “the pleated shirtdress” through Anne Adams for 75 cents, plus 25 cents for shipping. The dress “swings into action — travels to college, work, town, or away for weekends!” Accessorizing with scarves and beads is encouraged.
