The Wheatley Historic Preservation Association held a Juneteenth celebration on Monday, June 19, at the Historic Wheatley School. The event was centered around the theme “What Will You Do With Your Freedom?”
The celebration began with an invocation delivered by Reverend Ronald McCain, the WHPA Chaplain. Following the invocation, Rex Rattler II led the audience in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. Singer and musician Darrell Nelson performed the song “Lift Every Voice and Sing.”
WHPA President Robert Smith addressed the gathering, emphasizing the significance of Juneteenth and highlighting its connection to the concept of freedom. He also extended a welcome to special guests Magnolia Smith, Jade Campbell and September McCoy. The trio performed a song and dance routine titled “Brains & Beauty.”
Sephra Halliburton, Magnolia’s mother, expressed pride in her daughter’s achievement, stating, “They did well learning this in a week. They were a little nervous, but they really showed up and showed out, and I’m proud, I really want to see them go farther with this.”
In a moment of gratitude, Smith expressed appreciation to the audience, stating, “I enjoyed singing for all these people and I’m grateful that you all came to listen.”
The event also included an awards ceremony honoring individuals who have made significant contributions to both the church and the community. Calvin Anderson, Freda Ballard, Nathaniel Dash and Russell and Vernestine Kennedy were recognized for their hard work and achievements. McCain praised their dedication, emphasizing their commitment to teaching and working together with a genuine concern for others.
The WHPA’s Juneteenth celebration at the Historic Wheatley School was an inspiring event, according to organizers, because through music, dance and speeches, attendees were reminded of the importance of freedom and the contributions made by individuals within their community.
