Poplar Bluff’s police and fire chiefs will face off Thursday in the Battle of the Badges Thursday, and both say they’re out for blood — or rather lifesaving donations for the American Red Cross.

The event will be from 12:30-5:30 p.m. in the police department multi-use room, 911 N. Shelby Road.

Poplar Bluff Fire Chief Mike Moffitt and Poplar Bluff Police Chief Mike McClain agree their goal is to save lives.

“We are excited to be a part of this blood drive. In our line of work, we see the need for blood is constant and every contribution is important for a healthy and reliable blood supply. I encourage everyone to come out an d support this blood drive,” Moffitt said.

“The competition is simple,” McClain said. “The department that collects the most blood donations will be declared the winner. But, in the end, both departments are working toward a common goal, which is to save lives.”

Battle of the Badges is a national program with the Red Cross.

“Having two recently new chiefs, I thought it could be a great partnership and they both agreed,” said American Red Cross Account Manager Jerrica Fox. “I partner with many communities in my territory but had never worked with Poplar Bluff.”

“We see an increase in demand yet a decrease in donor turnout,” Fox said. “To make certain we don’t experience another blood shortage, we rely solely on the generosity of donors. We ask you kindly spare approximately one hour of your day to help us ensure hospital patients don’t go without live saving blood.”

All donors will receive a $10 gift card by email and a battle T-shirt, while supplies last. Summer is one of the most difficult times for blood collection due to vacations, graduations, ball season, etc., according to the Red Cross.
