Since 2013, the Poplar Bluff School District has maintained the tradition of allowing students to revisit their former schools just before their graduation. This event has proven to be an emotional day for both teachers and students alike.

Teresa Webb, a first-grade teacher at Eugene Field School with 16 years of experience, reminisced about her 23 students from Poplar Bluff’s graduating Class of 2023.

Recalling their vibrant personalities, she shared, “I have some great stories about this class. They were a very artsy and comical group, making our time together a lot of fun.”

Webb believes this experience not only brings joy to the graduates but also serves as an inspiration for younger students, showcasing the achievements of their older peers.

Reflecting on an occasion that is both happy and sad, Webb said, “This day is bittersweet, but we get to see them and feel a sense of pride in knowing we played a small role in their journey.”

Cheri Sparkman, who currently teaches second grade at Eugene Field, remembers this graduating class as her last group of fourth-grade students.

“This is one of my favorite days of the year,” she shared. “I love witnessing the celebration of their hard work. As a teacher, it brings a profound sense of fulfillment. I have contributed to their educational journey, even if it’s just a small part. You get to see how everything comes together.”

Sparkman further emphasized this event helps younger generations grasp their purpose and understand what they are working toward.

Despite currently teaching in Warren County, Shannon Wilkerson, former fourth grade teacher at Eugene Field, made the journey to witness her former students walk the familiar halls of their old school. Wilkerson expressed her excitement, saying, “This is one of the last classes I will see graduate from Poplar Bluff. It’s truly wonderful that they have the opportunity to return here, allowing us to witness their growth.”

During the event, students strolled through the halls, reconnecting with old teachers and revisiting their previous classrooms. In the library, they shared laughter and memories over cookies while flipping through yearbooks.

According to Eugene Field principal Jennifer Taylor, after reconnecting with former classrooms and teachers, the graduates chose to enter their previous lunchroom and gymnasium through the kitchen area, symbolizing their final walk through these familiar spaces.

As each student’s name was called, they made their way through the crowd of first, second and third graders, exchanging high-fives and hand slaps. The graduates were met with friendly faces, cheers and congratulatory signs, creating an atmosphere of celebration and support.

Seniors also traveled Wednesday to other Poplar Bluff elementary schools to meet with current students and former teachers.

On Thursday, the PBHS graduating class received their diplomas during the commencement ceremony held at the Black River Coliseum.
