Mingo Job Corps recently hosted an open house event for students and employers at its center in Puxico. It is one of 24 conservation centers situated across the U.S. and operated by the U.S. Forest Service.
During the open house, current students showcased the various tools and trade programs available at the center. Chris Rich, a former student and graduate who is now employed with Heartland Painting, shared his personal experience with Job Corps, highlighting its transformative impact.
“It gave me the discipline I needed to show up every day, the skills to know how to use the tools I need to use, it taught me everything,” he said.
He emphasized the importance of self-belief.
“Believe in yourself. It’s all you. You can have support from all over the world, but if you don’t want it, that support isn’t going to mean anything to you. You have to have it in yourself,” he said.
Mingo Job Corps offers comprehensive hands-on career training programs, along with academic courses such as reading and math, according to their website. Students can receive practical training in various areas, including bricklaying, carpentry, heavy equipment operation, painting, welding, forestry and office administration.
According to Katie Stunkel, program director for the forest service, the Mingo facility will soon introduce a more complete program focused on forestry, conservation and firefighting. Stunkel revealed the center will offer the complete trade program in these fields during the upcoming summer.
She highlighted the center’s objective.
“Our goal is to serve as a launchpad for hiring,” she said. “For the forest service in 2024, we aim to hire 100 students. Already this year, we have hired 40 individuals, with some of them being former students from Mingo. We are actively encouraging individuals to come here, receive training and secure government employment,” said Stunkel.
Job Corps is a tuition-free training and education program that provides entry-level vocational training opportunities. The programs are explained by staff to be designed to be self-paced, allowing students to progress at their own speed.
To further assist in supporting students, the facility offers three daily meals, basic medical care, training supplies and a small stipend.
During the open house, Brad White-Findeisen, responsible for admissions and outreach, was available to address questions and provide guidance to potential students.
White-Findeisen shared, “My office is conveniently located right behind China Garden in Poplar Bluff. Individuals aged 16-24 who are interested in our programs are encouraged to visit and discuss their eligibility.”
For more information or to speak with admissions, individuals can contact Brad White-Findeisen at 573-718-3418 or visit his office located at 1891 Sunset Drive, Suite A in Poplar Bluff.
