A statue in the Margaret Harwell Art Museum’s Sculpture Garden was found in pieces on Sunday morning.
Museum Director Steve Whitworth said the sculpture, known as “The Driftwood Mule,” was “knocked down, dragged to the neighbors yard, the head destroyed and scattered all over the grounds.”
He believes he has recovered most of the pieces.
“I think with clever person it can be reassembled to a reasonable facsimile,” he noted.
The sculpture was a fixture in the garden for 25 years. Whitworth believes the vandalism may have been a senior prank.
Poplar Bluff police are pursuing leads at this time, including a hat found at the scene.
“The Driftwood Mule” was insured for $3,000, Whitworth noted, but added, “I would rather have the person responsible pay for it.”
