The State Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of a early Friday morning fire at a vacant structure located at 945 Spring St.
The alarm came in at 12:03 a.m. about 20 minutes after the crews returned from a kitchen fire at 1914 Wallace St.
Battalion Chief Stacy Harmon’s report said the single-story, wood frame structure had heavy flames coming from the front and attic when the first crew arrived. The firefighters deployed lines to knock down flames on two sides to protect two structures in close proximity.
According to Lt. Andrew Fox’s statement, he and firefighters Joshua Buhler and Kenny Felts went inside to search to make certain no one was in the house.
Capt. Chad Bell’s report explained once the crews had extinguished the exterior fire, a crew used an extension ladder to gain access to the roof. Using a chainsaw, they cut two holes in the roof to gain access to the attic to finish extinguishing the fire and look for hot spots. The firefighters used 5,000 gallons of water.
The owner is listed as Harold Johnson, 114 C St.
A crew of one officer and two firefighters were called in to standby at Station 3 for any new calls.
Other crew members at the scene were firefighters Austin Armes and Tanner Tibbs, Lt. Jon Miller and Chief Mike Moffitt.
When the Spring Street alarm came in, the crews had just returned from a Wallace street fire, which Harmon reported as a building fire where clothing had been placed too close to a space heater. The only damage was a small melted spot in the linoleum floor. Firefighters used a gallon of water to put out the fire and installed a working smoke alarm. The occupant was Sharon Thomas.
Other fire calls Thusdsay were an authorized controlled burn 5:43 p.m., at 923 Apple St., and a small unauthorized burn at Alice and Lexington streets at 9:41 p.m. which firefighters used 5 gallons of water to put out.
