A kindergarten center educator has been selected as Teacher of the Year for the Poplar Bluff R-I District.

Building, grade level and district Teacher of the Year announcements were made Wednesday by school officials.

Christy Smith was selected as district Teacher of the Year, as well as elementary grade level and kindergarten center TOY. Smith will also represent R-I in the competition for Missouri Regional Teacher of the Year.

“Congratulations to each of you and the nominees on behalf of the Poplar Bluff Board of Education, administration, faculty and staff,” Mike Owen, assistant superintendent of personnel said in an announcement to teachers. “You have been selected and recognized for the qualities you possess as a teacher and for your impact as a building leader. We appreciate you and are proud of the honor you have received.”

The Daily American Republic will feature Outstanding Educators in an occasional series of stories starting Saturday, with Smith. Other educators recognized by Poplar Bluff R-I are:

• Dale Kennedy, middle school grade level TOY and middle school TOY.

• Tracey Hall, secondary grade level TOY and high school TOY

• Dee Jones, Mark Twain Alternative Center TOY

• Andrea Cline, O’Neal Elementary TOY

• Carey Wilkerson, Oak Grove Elementary TOY

• Adriann D’Amico, Lake Road Elementary TOY

• Kylee Moss, Eugene Field Elementary TOY

• Pennie Ethridge, Poplar Bluff Early Childhood Center TOY

• Candy Taylor, Poplar Bluff Technical Career Center TOY

• Amanda Bullington, Poplar Bluff Junior High TOY

A banquet will be hosted April 13 at the Poplar Bluff High School by the Greater Poplar Bluff Area Chamber of Commerce to honor area educators, including Teachers of the Year from Poplar Bluff R-I, Three Rivers College, Sacred Heart and Westwood Baptist Academy.

Poplar Bluff R-I will also honor its educators at a luncheon May 2.
