DONIPHAN — There may be many foolish goings on April 1, but all the smart folks will want to come to Doniphan and shop, as the city hosts its sixth annual city-wide yard sale.

Doniphan will become a veritable marketplace, drawing crowds of bargain-hunters into the city.

In the downtown area, all available lot space at the Country Pickens’ lot will be turned over to booths full of merchandise ranging from new, or perhaps lightly used to vintage and antique.

According to reports, booth space is no longer available.

“We are completely sold out, which means we can promise a packed sale, and it will be well worth the time for people to park and shop,” says Serra McCabe, who along with Doniphan City Treasurer Chasity Mathis, annually coordinates the event.

Most of the opportunities to shop will be within walking distance and will include the downtown shops along Washington and State Streets, and a short drive to the Hillcrest Plaza shopping center and Jamison’s SuperSaver located at the north end.

No one should go hungry. In addition to the many restaurants in Doniphan, food trucks and booths will be concentrated at the Riverfront Park.

Choices will include The German Cook, Tasty Sno Crabz, Lemonade House Grille, Exotic Grill (mobile), Bridget’s Variety Popcorn, Lexibakes, Kate’s Sweet Treats, Holy Rollin’ Rolled Ice Cream, Thomas Funnel Cake and the Poynor Volunteer Fire Department.

Mathis and McCabe encourage shoppers to hunt for yard sales along the side streets of Doniphan. (See page 11 of this issue of The Prospect-News for more yard sale locations).

Judging from calls and past city-wide yard sales, McCabe says, “We should have more than 100 sellers in town that day.”

Set-up is recommended to take place early, so that vendors may be ready for shoppers at 8 a.m. The sale officially ends at 4 p.m.

Weather forecasts look good for Saturday, with only a slight chance of rain. However, should those predictions prove false an alternative date has been set for the following week on April 8.
