Poplar Bluff police safely resolved a tense situation on Wednesday after encountering a suicidal male subject barricaded in a residence.

Just before noon, officers were dispatched to the 2500 block of North Main Street to perform a wellness check after a resident called 9-1-1 to report hearing a gunshot and a woman’s scream. Upon arrival police learned there was a suicidal male subject barricaded inside the residence with a firearm, which he had reportedly discharged once before officers reached the address.

Police made multiple attempts to contact the subject without success. Additional personnel were requested and a perimeter was established. The man was eventually taken into custody without incident and transported to the Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center Emergency Room for mental health treatment.

The Butler County Sheriff’s Office, Butler County EMS and Missouri State Highway Patrol all assisted during the incident, both on-scene and by taking on calls for service.
