Mary Catherine Thornton, 84, of Poplar Bluff, Missouri, passed away Feb. 2, 2023 at The Manor after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s.
Mary was born Sept. 15, 1938 to William and Maggie (Sprogs) Robertson in Earl, Arkansas. She married Hershel Thornton the love of her life and soulmate on June 1, 1955 in Mississippi. He preceded her in death.
Mary attended Living Word Baptist Church. She was a stay-at-home Mom. She raised three children, was a Girl Scout leader, room mother, director of Oak Hill Day Camp for several years. She loved camping but her real passion was helping raise her grandkids and great-grandkids. Mary and Hershel always said traveling and camping with the grandkids kept them young.
Mary is survived by children: Vicki Thornton (Gerald) High Ridge, Missouri, Cindy Baker (Terry) Poplar Bluff, Tim Thornton St. Louis, Missouri: grandchildren: Shawn Baker (Lori) Poplar Bluff, Shannon Pirtle (Shane) of Bonne Terre, Missouri; great-grandchildren: Jake, Hayden and Addison Pirtle, all of Bonne Terre, Missouri; brother: Charles Robertson of Oregon.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, husband, siblings: Marie Davis (Frank), Mildred Sharp (Buster), Jake Robertson (Hazel), Mable Robertson, Francis Comer, and Thomas Robertson.
Per Mary’s request there will be no visitation or service.
Memorials can be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation in her honor.
