Missouri Retired Teachers Association and the local unit, Butler County Retired Teachers and School Personnel, recently partnered to fund a project for Tammie Faughn’s students at Shady Grove State School. The project, Welcome to the Jungle Days, allows Faughn’s 9th-12th graders fun, interactive ways to learn the days of the week, months of the year, and local weather while incorporating fine motor skills.

“I’m so thankful for MRTA funding my classroom project. It is truly appreciated. Because of MRTA, my students will have what they need to make learning more successful,” said Faughn.

The project was funded through MRTA’S Cash for Classrooms program, initiated in 2021 as an effort to support local public teachers through state and local retiree units. Local retired teachers have made supporting active teachers a priority, as this is the second year the Butler County Retired Teachers have participated in the Cash for Classrooms program.

The BCRTSP unit donated $128 for Faughn’s entry through DonorsChoose, and requested approval under the state MRTA program, which designates $15,000 yearly in matching funds of up to $100 per local unit. Grant proposals must be submitted via the national nonprofit, which is the No. 1 classroom funding website for public school educators.

“Public school teachers have an enormous responsibility to each child in their classrooms and often need additional supplies to meet student needs. Butler County Retired Teachers are delighted to help and support fellow educators,” stated Linda Surber, BCRTSP President.
