Two Doniphan High School graduates recently celebrated their advancement at the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine during a White Coat ceremony held on Oct. 16.

Wyatt Eaton, 2014 DHS graduate, and Erica Payne, 2016 DHS graduate, took part in the ceremony that recognizes their completion of the academic portion of the veterinary program and the beginning of 19 months of clinical, hands-on training. They are on track to graduate in Spring 2024.

Eaton, son of Dan and LeAnne Eaton, attended College of the Ozarks earning a bachelor’s degree in animal science, graduating in 2019. He spent a semester at Missouri State University before being accepted into the University of Missouri.

Eaton stated, “I’ve always had the desire to be a vet, growing up on the farm as a kid and everything really helped shape that desire.

“Then I started shadowing at Dr. Hicks clinic in Poplar Bluff and was hooked ever since. I love what I do, and when I’m home going to the clinic to work, I’ve never felt like I had to go to work. It’s always felt like I’m lucky I get to go to work. That’s when I knew that’s what I want to do with my life.”

Payne, daughter of Kevin and Janet Payne, earned her bachelor’s degree in Agri-business: Animal Science from Southeast Missouri State University in 2020. Payne commented, “Like many others, it was my dream since I was a young girl to become a veterinarian. It wasn’t until I was older that I realized it was much more than a dream to me. Ever since the first day that I shadowed at Hillcrest Animal Hospital, my passion for veterinary medicine has only grown stronger. Within the first few hours of shadowing, I was hooked. I loved the fast-paced environment, seeing all the patients, meeting the clients, and learning the science behind it all.

“The best part is having the chance to help so many people by helping their pets and livestock. Veterinary medicine gives me the opportunity to bring together two great passions of my life, caring for animals and serving others. I feel so blessed to have had the opportunity to go through veterinary school, and I look forward to serving the community someday!”

Wyatt and Erica were both highly ranked in their high school classes academically, with Erica achieving Co-Valedictorian. Wyatt was involved in sports and FFA, and Erica participated in sports and choir.

Eaton and Payne were selected from over one thousand applicants from across the country for only 120 openings in the veterinary program.
