SIKESTON — A Sikeston juvenile and adult are recovering from separate, early Wednesday gunshot wounds that occurred near each other.

According to Sikeston Department of Public Safety, the two incidents did occur in close proximity to each other but have been determined to be two separate incidents that remain under investigation.

Just after midnight Wednesday, officers with the Sikeston Department of Public Safety responded to the 100 block of Ruth in Sikeston for reports of gunfire, according to Capt. Jon R. Broom with Sikeston DPS. While officers were on scene investigating, they learned an adult male with a gunshot wound to his shoulder had arrived in the emergency room at a local hospital, Broom said. This person reported to the officers he was shot near Ruth Street, he said.

During the course of the investigation, officers were able to identify and take one subject into custody, and formal charges are pending. The scene of the shooting was located and investigated. Names of the individuals involved are not being released at this time.

“Approximately 30 minutes later, officers received a second call of a 12-year-old male with a gunshot wound to the leg,” Broom said.

This was also in the 100 block of Ruth but at a different location.

“This juvenile reported to officers he was asleep inside his home when he was struck in the leg by gunfire,” Broom said.

The juvenile was flown to a St. Louis hospital for treatment. Both gunshot victims are expected to recover, Broom said.

Sikeston DPS investigators responded to the scene and collected several items of evidence related to the two shootings.

“These incidents remains under investigation,” Broom said.

Sikeston DPS asked anyone with information about either incident to call and speak with an investigator. Calls can made to DPS’ Tip Line at (573)475-3774 or DPS’ main non-emergency number at (573)471-4711.
