A self-motivated Neelyville student is expanding her skill sets to creating a YouTube channel to read to children and coordinating outdoor activities for her family as part of her Girl Scout journey.

It’s an experience that is helping her move forward as a Scout to new badge levels, while learning independence and leadership skills.

Sixth-grader Annabella Anderson recently spent 20 hours working on a service project to obtain her Bronze certificate in Girl Scouts.

“It’s important for children to get into books before they go to school and some children don’t have access to the library and can’t afford books so I created a YouTube channel where I read books aloud for them,” said Anderson.

Annabella is currently acting as an independent scout due to family time constraints, so she takes the initiative to complete these projects on her own.

“She just bridged up to a cadet, so now she will be working on her silver certificate, but she wants to continue to work on her reading and she wants to get her friends involved,” said mom Mindy Anderson.

Annabella said the library was a great asset while she was working on her project.

“They are very helpful. They gave her a space to set up and some recommendations,” Mindy Anderson added.

Annabella said her favorite book to read during her service project was “The Velveteen Rabbit.” Along with her reading project, she also finished what the Girl Scouts refer to as a journey.

She chose an outdoor journey which consisted of coordinating a family camping trip.

“She was responsible for everything, she even cooked for us,” said Mindy Anderson. “We even got fancy and did some shrimp foil packets over the fire.”

During this take-action project, as she referred to it, Annabella also made a video on fire safety and prevention.

Annabella says she is unsure what her next service project will be, but she knows this is something she intends to keep doing.

“She is pretty self-motivated,” said Mindy Anderson proudly.
