Pastor Calvin Buhler, 78, of Poplar Bluff, entered Heaven’s gates at 2 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2022, surrounded by his family at his home.

Calvin was born Dec. 8, 1944, son of the late Roy Buhler and Alice St. Cin, of Neelyville, Missouri. Calvin was the Associate Pastor of Collins Chapel for seven years before becoming the pastor of New Home General Baptist Church in 1981. The church was a traditional General Baptist flock when he arrived nearly four decades ago and had a congregation of about 25 people. The church began to grow in numbers and the building was enlarged; eventually the old church building was torn down and a new building was erected, of which he was very proud. Calvin pastored New Home for 38 1/2 years before retiring in 2019, having pastored around 200 regularly attending people each Sunday. Besides pastoring, Calvin loved to fish with his fishing buddies, go on drives with his sweetheart, and take yearly Branson trips with his “Kids.” Calvin married his high school sweetheart Nov. 25, 1962, Shelbea Jean Mitchell, she survives. This November would be their 60th wedding anniversary.

Also surviving is one son, Phillip (Donna) Buhler of Poplar Bluff; two granddaughters, Allyson (Kyle) Huggins of Poplar Bluff and Madison (Zac) Goode of Columbia, Missouri; two great-grandsons, Ty and Bryar Huggins, who he loved with all his heart.
