Violet Louis Mathias, 91, of Poplar Bluff, Missouri, passed away Saturday, Oct. 1, 2022, at her home.
Violet was born on March 14, 1931, to Jim and Leona Simmons in Lynchburg, Tennessee. She was one of 11 children and grew up on a farm in the hill country of South-Central Tennessee.
Violet attended high school in Flintville, Tennessee and college at Oakland City, Indiana and Rounsville Business College in Poplar Bluff, Missouri.
Violet was married to Riley Mathias on May 5, 1947. She entered Christian service with her husband in 1951 and assisted him in his ministry throughout her lifetime. Violet worked along beside her husband in the Christian Education ministry for 20 years in the General Baptist denomination.
Some of Violet’s major hobbies were quilting, cross stitch, and working in the local church teaching Sunday school. She taught Sunday school for approximately 25 years.
She traveled widely with her husband having visited most of the U.S. states and several foreign countries.
Violet is survived by two children, Janet Allen and Timothy Mathias.
Violet was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one daughter, Patricia Ray; one grandson, Billy Joe Ray; and two brothers and six sisters.
Visitation will be held from 1 -2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6, 2022, at Cotrell Willow Ridge Funeral & Cremation Services. Funeral service will follow, beginning at 2 p.m. with Pastor Byron Beck and Ernie Rogers officiating. Burial will take place at Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
