Poplar Bluff High School graduate Emily Lovette has been awarded the $1,500 Mary Lynn Wolpers Scholarship, designated for a Poplar Bluff student entering a four-year university or technical school.
Lovette plans to major in social work at the University of Mississippi in Oxford, and then attend law school, ultimately working in family law with children in the foster care system. She said in her essay that she used to desire to be a teacher until taking part in a mission camp through her church youth group in an impoverished area of South Carolina, where she had the opportunity to spend time with underprivileged children last summer.
“This trip inspired me to go into the social work field and work with children in these distressing situations, such as children in the foster care system,” Lovette said. “It is time for America to fix the broken system that a plethora of children belongs to.”
Since 2007, the Wolpers Scholarship has awarded $24,000 to 16 students of Poplar Bluff High School.
