The 11th annual UCAN Sarah Jarboe White Walk slated for Saturday, April 30, is canceled due to the chance of severe weather.
The UCAN Board of Directors and staff said, “We post this with a broken heart. The walk is our favorite day of the year, we get to see our most favorite people.”
The Board of Directors and staff explained they “have made the decision to [err]on the side of caution and safety and we will be canceling the event due to the chance of severe weather.”
UCAN Executive Director Melody Chailland said, “We still have 500 memorial trees to hand out, so come see us tomorrow at the Danny Bell Cancer Center (1899 N. Westwood Blvd.) from 8:30-10 a.m. and drive thru under the canopy and we will give you a tree of your choice if you are wearing a UCAN walk tee, if you are not…a $5 donation will get you your choice of a dogwood, red bud, oak, cypress or poplar tree.”
Chailland explained, UCAN is 100% locally funded and the money from the walk is used to help support cancer patients in Butler, Stoddard, Wayne and Ripley counties.
She continued, “We are so sorry we had to make this decision, but we want you dry and safe….the world needs each and every one of you in it.”
The walk is one of UCAN’s major fundraisers and is named for White, who was a daughter, sister, wife, mother and teacher who battled cancer with courage and grace before her death in January 2012. The walk honors and remembers her and many other cancer patients.
This year’s theme is Matthew 11:29, which is, “Walk with me and work with me — watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you.”
