The Margaret Harwell Art Museum is hosting its first ever Invitational Art Exhibit for students in kindergarten through 8th grade, from 1-4 p.m. Sunday, March 6.
Museum director Steve Whitworth said art classrooms from all Poplar Bluff schools have been invited to submit three pieces for the show. The exhibit will lead into the upcoming 22nd Annual Juried Regional High School Art Exhibit and give younger students a chance to see their artwork displayed for the whole community.
“We’re excited to have the littler kids who haven’t ever had the opportunity to show their work. And so now it’s their opportunity to shine, right before the high school competition,” he said, adding, “This is just an exhibit, not a competition.”
The high school exhibit is scheduled for the first Sunday in April.
Whitworth thanked retired teachers Marty Harlan and Laura Dowd, freelance instructor Tara Brown and teacher Subrina Berger for their help in assembling the exhibition. If all goes well, it could become a semi-annual event.
“We thought it’d be a fun thing to do this year because we hadn’t had that in the past. And so we might do this ... alternating years, maybe every other year or so, to give those little kiddos a chance to exhibit in the big art museum,” said Whitworth.
Families of students and the community are invited to Sunday’s exhibit. Drinks and refreshments will be provided, including cookies donated by The Donut House.
