Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center will offer several public events during February in recognition of American Heart Month.

PRRMC’s health care providers will talk with people in the community about heart health, wellness and heart disease prevention.

Heart disease is one of the country’s most costly and deadly diseases, and it can affect anyone, according to hospital officials.

The community is invited to take part in any of these free events to help educate themselves on how to be heart healthy and prevent future illness and disease.

The first event kicks off on Friday, Feb. 4, with National Wear Red Day/Go Red for Women. People are encouraged to wear red, and the focus is on heart health for women.

PBRMC is hosting an online Lunch & Learn with an all-female panel of experts. Local health care specialists will discuss women and heart disease, common risk factors/symptoms for women and prevention.

Scheduled panelists include: Cardiologist Dr. Rubina Mirza; Leona Bergen, ANCP, FNP; STEMI Coordinator Cheryl Joy, RN, MSN; Cath Lab Manager Angie Taylor, RCIS; and ED Director, Mary-Beth Sanders, RN, MSN.

This is an online event; registration is not required, but participants will need access to a computer or other device with internet access. To join, visit PBRMC’s events page at https://www.pbrmc.com/classes-events.

On Friday, Feb. 18, Poplar Bluff Mayor Steve Davis will deliver a special announcement to proclaim “Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center Heart Awareness Day.” This event is scheduled for 9:15 a.m. at the front entrance of the hospital at 3100 Oak Grove Road.

Following the announcement, PBRMC will hold its first “Heart Fair in the Heartland” event at the Westwood Center from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

A panel of PBRMC health care providers will discuss the continuum of heart health. The heart health experts will include: Cardiologist Dr. Roland Njoh; Primary Care Director Dr. David Wood; Butler County EMS Director David Ross; ED Director Mary-Beth Sanders; Pharmacy Director Stacy Mangum; and Director of Cardiology Services, Rodney Brown, RN, BSN, MBA.

A number of free screenings will be available, including blood pressure checks and blood sugar tests. A heart-healthy lunch will be provided, as well as heart-healthy snacks and educational/heart smart takeaways

Registration is required to attend this event.

During February, PBRMC will also raise funds for the American Heart Association. These funds help the AHA with heart research, public health education, and lifesaving advancements such as the artificial heart valve, cholesterol-inhibiting drugs, heart transplant capabilities and CPR techniques and guidelines.

All funds donated through PBRMC will stay in Missouri. Donations can be made online or in the PBRMC Gift Shop. Those who donate are eligible for a long-sleeve Heart Healthy t-shirt (while supplies last), which can be picked up in the hospital gift shop near the cafeteria from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Donation minimum is $25, and contributors must show proof of donation to receive their t-shirt. For more, visit, https://app.mobilecause.com/vf/PBRMCHEART or text PBRMCHEART to 71777.
