ELLINGTON — Whole Kids Outreach’s annual Christmas Market opened Thursday, but WKO is still accepting donations of cash and new toys for children in underprivileged and rural communities.

The Christmas Market, which is held on WKO’s Ellington campus at 62143 Highway 21, runs from Dec. 9-10 and Dec. 13-15 this year.

Their remaining hours are noon-6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 10, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday, Dec. 13, noon-6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 14, and 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 15.

WKO co-founder and director Anne Francioni said the market serves about around 400 families, or 1,100 children, and provides three gifts per child.

Its value for SEMO families is not only as a source of toys, but a way for parents to get gifts for their children without needing to accept handouts. Shoppers earn vouchers to the Christmas Market by volunteering or giving a small donation.

“And so, you think about 1,100 children are going to get at least three beautiful gifts that their moms and dads know they’re looking for, that the moms and dads get to pick out — but it’s not a handout. They have helped us and we help them,” said Francioni.

Due to COVID-19, the shoppers first sign up with WKO and reserve scheduled time slots. Attendees are also screened for fevers and risk factors such as recent travel and must remain masked inside. Staff will help parents shop to limit physical contact with the toys.

Families who want to register may still do so by calling 573-663-3257. Anyone wishing to donate money or toys should contact Connie Lanaghan at lanaghan@wholekidsoutreach.com. Those interested in volunteering can find more information at volunteerwholekidsoutreach.org/volunteer.
