A 25-year-old woman was killed and an eight-year-old female in her vehicle sustained serious injuries in a one-vehicle accident Thursday afternoon south of Poplar Bluff on Highway 142.

A 25-year-old woman was killed and an eight-year-old female in her vehicle sustained serious injuries in a one-vehicle accident Thursday afternoon south of Poplar Bluff on Highway 142.

It was the second serious accident for the region in the past two days. Another woman sustained serious injuries in a one-vehicle accident Wednesday evening, south of Doniphan, that allegedly involved alcohol.

Individuals in both vehicles were not wearing seat belts, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

Logan A. Markham, 25, of Doniphan was operating a 2007 Chevrolet Suburban southbound at 12:40 p.m. Thursday on Highway 142, three miles south of Poplar Bluff when it ran off the left side of the roadway and struck a tree.

Markham was pronounced dead at 12:50 p.m. at the scene by Butler County coroner Jim Akers, while an eight-year-old female passenger in the Suburban was transported by air ambulance to Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital in St. Louis. Markham was not wearing a seatbelt, according to the MSHP.

Markham is the 53rd fatality in Troop E this year.

A 35-year-old woman sustained serious injuries in a one-vehicle accident at 5:06 p.m. Wednesday on Highway A, eight miles south of Doniphan.

According to the MSHP, Michelle L. Morris, 35, of Doniphan was operating a 2001 Chevrolet Blazer northbound when it traveled off the right side of the roadway and overturned, ejecting Morris.

Morris was transported by Survival Flight to St. Bernards Medical Center in Jonesboro, Arkansas.

At 5:46 p.m., Morris was arrested in Ripley County on suspicion of DWI (alcohol), driving while revoked and no seat belt. She was released for medical treatment.
