Qulin Middle School held its Veteran’s Day program in the Lion’s Club pavilion across from the school building, featuring student vocal performances and a special presentation on the history of Veteran’s Day from a hometown hero, first sergeant Douglas Ledbetter.

The student council began the proceedings with an armed forces medley, featuring the themes of the Army, Marine Corps, Air Force, Navy and Coast Guard. They were followed by 5th grade students singing the National Anthem, a middle school and junior high collaboration for “Proud To Be An American” and “God Bless America,” then a trio performance of “Traveling Soldier.” Students introduced Ledbetter, who explained Veteran’s Day was originally called Armistice Day, marking the end of WWI and honoring only soldiers of that conflict. It became Veteran’s Day after WWII and the Korean War.

“Today we honor all of our veterans...these men and women were ordinary until they heard the call and answered it,” said Ledbetter.

School principal Seth McBroom ended the program by calling veterans in the audience to the front to receive applause and handshakes from the students.

Long-term substitute teacher and music director Amanda Moore directed the students’ singing and praised their hard work.

“I think it went very well, and I think they’re also proud of themselves,” she said.

McBroom believes the program resonated with students, which is part of why the celebration is important.

“Even if it just touches one kid, it’s still worth it,” he said.
