WILDERSVILLE, Tennessee — Thomas Francis O’Connor Jr., 82, formerly of Poplar Bluff, died unexpectedly Monday, Aug. 2, 2021, at his home in Trezevant, Tennessee.

The service was conducted Aug. 6, 2021, at Brummitt Funeral Home in Trezevant, with graveside military honors at the Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery at Parkers Crossroads in Wildersville.

Mr. O’Connor was born July 19, 1939, in Poplar Bluff to Thomas and Darlene Davis O’Connor. A 1957 graduate of Poplar Bluff High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served eight years, including service as a hospital corpsman first class in Vietnam, earning the Bronze Star and Good Conduct Medal.

On Nov. 26, 1960, he married fellow Navy hospital corpsman Carol Radtke in Portsmouth, Virginia. After he was discharged from the Navy, they moved to Poplar Bluff, where he joined and later managed the family business, Modern Laundry and Dry Cleaners, on the East Side. He served on the Poplar Bluff City Council and was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He was a lifetime AMVETS member and served as the organization’s Missouri state commander.

After marrying Ann Wilson in 1990, he and his wife moved to Memphis, where he worked as a hub auditor for FedEx until they retired to Trezevant. He enjoyed woodworking as a hobby.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his former wife, Carol O’Connor, who died in 2020 in Birmingham, England.

Surviving is his wife, Ann O’Connor of Trezevant; one daughter, Martha O’Connor of Birmingham, England; a stepdaughter, Angela Hawkins of Atwood, Tennessee; a stepson, John Grantham of Brighton, Tennessee; a brother, Bill O’Connor of Philomath, Oregon; a sister, Linda Garnatz of Tampa, Florida; a stepbrother, John West, Jr., of Poplar Bluff; and five grandchildren.

The family suggest memorials be made to AMVETS Post 29, 115 East Harper St., Poplar Bluff, Mo., 63901, or to the American Cancer Society.
