Qulin gym will be remodeled in the coming school year, the Twin Rivers R-X Board of Education discussed at a recent meeting as preparations for the new school year were reviewed.

Classes will resume Aug. 23 for all Butler County districts.

The Qulin gym floor, which suffered water damage, is being replaced using ESSA (Every Student Succeeds Acts) funds. ESSA’s main goal is to give states more of a say in how schools account for student achievement. This includes the achievement of disadvantaged students.

School officials also reported on their buildings.

Fisk Principal Leean Mann said, “Many teachers have already been working in their rooms.”

Many buildings are also getting a fresh coat of paint before the new school year.

Mann expressed appreciation for students who helped with the painting, and Qulin Elementary principal Seth McBroom discussed the progress of the painting at his school.

Superintendent Dr. Ben Johnson referred to these activities as a beautification plan.

High school principal Misti Lovelace said BETA, FBLA and the yearbook staff have been busy as well. Board members learned Hannah Patterson won a speech award at the National BETA convention.

Athletic Director Dalton Freshur explained to board members about changes to Missouri State High School Activities Association rules and stated that Blane Pruett signed with William’s Baptist University on a basketball scholarship.

Board members also learned there is a two-day teacher training session scheduled for Aug. 17-18.

Bids: A bid for pest control was awarded to Baker’s Pest control; a bid for LP gas was tabled to get prices on tanks if the service is switched; and a septic bid was accepted from C&S Septic.

The board also set a cap of $2,500 for spending by administration without board approval and approved spending $1,300 on a back-to-school fair.

Policies regarding bereavement and sick leave for the teachers were postponed until the next board meeting, scheduled for Aug. 17.
