Members of the Poplar Bluff Street Department recently spent three days giving a section of downtown sidewalk a makeover.

It’s something they hope to do more of, as time allows, according to Superintendent Jerry Lawson.

“It’s been on the project list for about two and a half years,” Lawson said of the work, which was done in front of the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry in the 200 block of Broadway Street. “The old curb was about two inches higher on the sidewalk side. There was a bad lip.”

The work repaired about 130 feet of the sidewalk.

The area was targeted because of the amount of traffic the food pantry sees on distribution days, Lawson said.

“I have plans for more sidewalk work to do in various parts of town,” he said. “We’ll try to do a little bit in every ward and take into consideration (safety and heavier traffic).”

The street department also completed an overlay of High Street this week and repairs to Katy Lane.
