Percy and Peggy Kiefer of Poplar Bluff will celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary Sunday, June 6, with a small family gathering at their home.
Daughter Doris Hastings recalls stories about her parents dating six weeks before getting married, and they are still together. Her mother finally agreed to date her dad because he always was following her and her friends to the movie theater in Steele. Admission to the movies was a nickel.
The Kiefers are both 88 years old. Percy is the eldest by nine days. His birthday is April 23, 1933, while Peggy’s birthday is April 29, 1933.
The Kiefers’ raised their family in Barado, Michigan, before moving to Poplar Bluff in 1971. Percy worked at Florsheim Shoe Factory and Poplar Bluff schools before he retired.
Peggy was a housewife who raised their five children, which includes first-born twins Danny (Valire) and Jeannie, Dennis (Diane), Dave (Jane) and Doris. Jeanie died Aug. 14, 2011.
They have 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
The Kiefer family was raised Lutheran. Peggy enjoyed bingo while Percy liked to fish and hunt.
