Flower sale fundraiser Saturday for UCAN
The 12th Annual Xi Kappa Mother’s Day Flower Sale benefitting UCAN (United Cancer Assistance Network) will be held Saturday at Poplar Bluff Realty, Highway 67 North.
While flowers may be pre-ordered, the sale will begin at 8 a.m. and end at noon, unless sold out before noon.
Mother’s Day is a special time in everyone’s life, according to organizers, and the Xi Kappa sorority has helped honor mothers, as well as cancer patients, for years.
The sorority sisters say they understand cancer. While some have battled the disease, others have watched and helped family members and friends challenge cancer. The Xi Kappa Flower Sale offers community members an opportunity to help the patients and their families.
During the time Xi Kappa has sponsored the flower sale, the group has donated 100% of the sale to UCAN. UCAN Executive Director Melody Chailland anticipates this year’s sale and donations will bring the total to $25,000.
All flowers are locally grown and chosen especially for this sale by Xi Kappa members from an area nursery. There will be a colorful array of hanging baskets and hanging bags of petunias, impatiens, purslanes and more.
Sorority members all agree cancer is all too common in their lives. One members is a survivor of ovarian cancer. Two members have had breast cancer and survived. Some have lost parents, husbands, sisters, brothers, friends and coworkers to cancer.
Members say they wanted to do something that would ease the burden not only on the patients, but on their families and caregivers, as well.
Chailland said, “Flowers always are a perfect gift, but when you buy them at the benefit, the money will be helping cancer patients and their families.”
Sorority members describe Xi Kappa as a group of hard working women who want to take the time once a year to show the Poplar Bluff area how much they care.
The funds also may be used to pay bills like utilities and rent, Chailland said.
