Butler County may have set a new voting record Tuesday, for the lowest turnout.

Butler County Clerk Tonyi Deffendall said she would need to confirm that the 6.61% turnout of active registered voters was the lowest in the county’s history, but that it was certainly the lowest in recent history.

The 1,749 voters who did cast ballots Tuesday secured a new tax for the city of Fisk and weighed in on a city of Poplar Bluff use tax, seats for Poplar Bluff and Neelyville school boards, seats on the Butler County Health Department board, among other issues.

Seats on the Butler County Health Department board were secured by Dr. Dorothy Munch (1,319), James Harlan (919), and Richard Montgomery (933). Yvonne Pope lost with 633 votes.

The city of Fisk will be able to impose a license tax of 4% of gross receipts from the retail distribution and sale of utility services in the city. The issue was decided by 34 voters, with 21 in favor and 13 against the measure.

The tax can be collected on natural gas, telephone and telecommunication services, electric, and other utilities.
