A local effort to help senior citizens file for their property tax and rental credits will end Tuesday.
AARP and the Butler County Retired Senior Volunteer Program began the tax clinic service in February, helping seniors prepare their 2020 tax returns.
RSVP Director Jennifer Rosener said those needing help still have time to call for an appointment for assistance. Those planning to use the groups’ services will need to make appointments by calling the RSVP office at 573-686-8624.
To date this tax season, the group has served nearly 200 people with a total refund amount reaching $130,000.
In order to claim the PTC, one must be 65 or older, or 100% disabled. Rosener added there are also income guidelines, and if one has federal tax withheld they must file a 1040, which the group is not doing this year due to COVID-19 restrictions.
The paperwork needed, Rosener said, are all forms of income, “Social Security, if they receive a pension, if they have interest income, they have to bring all those into us. One way they can know if they have the right thing usually on the form, it’ll be a 1099 or 1098.
“If they’re doing the property tax, they have to have a paid property tax receipt. If they are renting, they have to have a form 5674 filled out by their landlord.”
Forms can be found online at the Missouri Department of Revenue website, www.dor.mo.gov.
The IRS recently extended the filing and payment deadline from April 15 to May 17 for individuals. Missouri also extended filing and payment for state individual taxes to May 17.
