Elementary students at the Neelyville R-IV school district will have the option to participate in summer school this year.

Superintendent Debra Parish said summer school will be from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. June 3 through June 30.

“The district recognizes there is a need this year to provide summer school due to the decrease in seated classes for COVID and the inclement weather we recently experienced,” Parish said. “We hope to serve all who have needs and all who want to participate. Currently, we have 132 elementary students expressing interests.”

The district sent out a survey, she said, and is in the process of surveying high school students to see about offering summer school to them as well.

The district did not have summer school last year. Parish said there hasn’t been summer school in several years.

“The elementary curriculum will focus on the Missouri Learning Standards to ensure the development of solid educational growth. Intervention and enrichment will be provided,” she said. “High school students will have the opportunity to recover credits through the Edgenuity Program.

School Days

After a series of snow days, the district has three and a half days to make up before the end of the 2020-21 school year.

School board members approved Thursday night to have school April 15-16, which were originally scheduled as curriculum and parent/teacher conference days.

Originally, May 14 was going to be the last day of school, Parish said. Rather than the half-day originally scheduled, she said, it is going to be a full day, and Monday, May 17, will be the last day of classes instead. It will be a full day, Parish said.

After School

At a parent’s request, the district is looking into interest in an after-school program for elementary school students.

Parish said the district will put out a survey to gauge interest and look into grant options to fund it.

Ideally, board members said, a program would include activities and tutoring for students.
