Charles W. Lindberg of Poplar Bluff passed away at the age of 90 on Saturday, Jan. 16, 2021, at Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center.
Charles was born July 17, 1930, in Craig, Nebraska, to Walfrid and Berniece Lindberg.
He is survived by his wife Barbara (Kirkley) Lindberg, whom he married April 17, 1982. He is also survived by: a son, William (Heidi) Lindberg of South Carolina; one daughter, Kristen (Daron) Lazalier; three grandchildren, Amanda of California, Charley (Allyson) Lindberg of Cape Girardeau, and Brandy (Brandon) Simmons of Mascouthah, Illinois, two step-grandchildren, George and Katina of California; and several great and great-great grandchildren
He was preceded in death by: his parents; a son, John Charles and wife, Debra Lindberg; a brother, John Byron and wife, Lois Lindberg; and a sister, Bonnie and husband E.C. Brown.
He joined the Marines Nov. 18, 1947, and retired Dec. 31, 1967. He then served 10 years in the reserves.
He went to work for the McDonald’s Corp., working his way up from crew member to management positions and other positions in the corporation until buying his own McDonald’s.
He came to Poplar Bluff in 1978 to build the McDonald’s restaurant that everyone said were too far out of town at that time. He retired from McDonald’s in 1989. Then he went back to work at the Turkey Trot Lounge and later the Strawberry Hill Antiques, until retiring again in 1999.
He enjoyed his retirement the last 20 years by being outside, planting all kinds of bushes, trees and roses. He enjoyed selling Hot Wheels and going to the Sale Barn. He was always happy and had a good outlook on life. He always said every day in Southeast Missouri is a good day, some better than others, even when two trees fell on him and his truck on W Highway.
Due to the circumstances of COVID, there will be a graveside service and viewing only. This will take place at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 20, at Kinsey Cemetery off V Highway near Harviell. There will be full military rites. There will be no minister present, but the family asks anyone there to share some memories to honor Charles’ life.
