Wappapello woman dies after being struck by SUV

A 29-year-old Wappapello woman died early Sunday morning after she was struck by a vehicle on Highway 51, one mile south of Broseley.

According to the report, a southbound 2002 Chevrolet Blazer struck Chelsie N. Fortner in the road just after midnight. The SUV’s driver reportedly left the scene and is unknown.

Fortner was taken by ambulance to Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at 1:10 a.m. by a doctor there.

Fortner is the 63rd fatality in Troop E this year.
